Several School District of Palm Beach County students and an administrator were recently honored at the Kravis Center’s Dream Awards – Celebrating High School Musical Theater Excellence event earlier this month.

Guests at the Dream Awards showcase were treated to performances by 145 students from several local high schools. Featured musicals included Disney’s Beauty and the Beast, Fiddler on the Roof, Kiss Me, Kate and Sweet Charity.

The Dream Awards pilot program was launched for the 2017-2018 school year and sponsored by PNC Bank’s Arts Alive grant program for the visual and performing arts.

It was designed to provide much-needed enrichment for students and drama teachers, giving them the ability to learn from theater professionals. By launching the program, the Kravis Center expanded the resources available to under-served students and under-funded theater arts programs in Palm Beach County schools.

The program also helps make the community aware of the fine work being produced in local high schools, while offering performance excellence at an affordable ticket price. Kravis Center theater adjudicators viewed and critiqued musical theater productions at Alexander W. Dreyfoos School of the Arts, Boca Raton High, Boynton Beach Community High, Palm Beach Central High, Suncoast Community High, and Wellington High. The adjudicators prepared written evaluations of student performances, then provided feedback to both the students and directors to enhance the growth of each individual program.

“We have always wanted to create a high school musical theater awards program here at the Kravis Center, and we could not be happier with our first Dream Awards showcase performance,” said Judith Mitchell, CEO of the Kravis Center.

“Our community has become the cultural capital of Florida, and these awards are a testament to the mission of the Kravis Center, as well as to the hard work by our local educators to make arts education a priority for our young people.”

Below are some of the award winners from the inaugural showcase:

  • Michelle Petrucci, Dean of Theatre at Alexander W. Dreyfoos School of the Arts – Educator of the Year
  • Skyler Sajewski, Alexander W. Dreyfoos School of the Arts – Outstanding Lead Actress for her role as Kate in Kiss Me, Kate
